Description

Linezolid (brand name Zyvox) is a synthetic oxazolidinone antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by resistant Gram-positive bacteria, such as MRSA and VRE. It is available as oral tablets, oral suspension, or intravenous injection, and works by stopping bacteria from producing essential proteins.

Uses & Effectiveness

Linezolid is highly effective for treating:

Pneumonia: Both hospital-acquired and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia.
Skin Infections: Complicated skin and soft tissue infections.
Resistant Infections: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

How to Take It

Dosage: Adults and children 12+ typically take 400 mg to 600 mg every 12 hours. Doses for children under 12 are calculated based on body weight.
Administration: It can be taken with or without food. If using the oral liquid suspension, it should be gently mixed and any unused portion discarded after 21 days.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common side effects: Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and headache.
Blood monitoring: Prolonged use (over 2 weeks) can lower white blood cell and platelet counts, potentially increasing the risk of infection or bleeding. Regular blood tests are typically recommended.
Nerve issues: Long-term use can rarely lead to peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, or weakness in limbs).
Serotonin Syndrome: Taking linezolid with certain antidepressants (like SSRIs) or opioid pain medications can cause dangerously high levels of serotonin.
Lactic Acidosis: Rare but serious; symptoms include nausea, vomiting, or rapid breathing.
