Description

Ozanimod (sold under the brand name Zeposia) is an oral prescription medication used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC) in adults. As a sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator, it works by trapping certain white blood cells in the lymph nodes, thereby reducing the inflammation that attacks nerves or the colon.

Dosage & Administration

Ozanimod is taken as a single oral capsule once a day. Because it can affect heart rate, therapy begins with a gradual dose escalation:

Days 1–4: 0.23 mg daily
Days 5–7: 0.46 mg daily
Day 8 onward: 0.92 mg daily (standard maintenance dose)

Uses & Indications

Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Treats clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. It does not cure MS but reduces the number of relapses and slows the accumulation of physical disability.
Ulcerative Colitis (UC): Used for adult patients who have had an inadequate response or are intolerant to conventional or biologic therapies.

Important Warnings

Infections: Ozanimod reduces your lymphocyte count, which can impair your body’s ability to fight infections. You should not take it if you have an active, severe infection and must be monitored for potential risks like progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
Heart Rhythm: It can cause a temporary decrease in heart rate or irregular rhythms when treatment is first initiated.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Ozanimod can cause fetal harm and should be avoided if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
